THE STORY: The Friends of Witham Oaks has been raising money to preserve 95 wooded acres off Northwest Harrison Boulevard as open space. The asking price on the scenic parcel is $3 million. The property, once slated for a 221-home subdivision, was foreclosed by U.S. Bank in 2009 after developer Legend Homes sought bankruptcy protection. Legend has since emerged from reorganization but renounced its claims to the Witham Oaks property.
THE LATEST: In December, the Friends of Witham Oaks set a goal to raise $250,000 by March 31. Last week, with the help of a matching challenge, it met that goal. Now, the group has a second fundraising goal set by an anonymous donor, who has offered to put up $50,000 if the group can raise the same. So far, the group has raised $30,000 toward that goal.
