SALEM (AP) - Proposed pay raises for legislators and other public officials drew complaints from Oregon residents at a hearing in Salem.

A public commission is recommending raising legislators' pay by 22 percent and the governor's pay by almost 40 percent, to bring their pay in line with that of officials in other states.

But people who testified on the increases Thursday said that especially with the economy turning sour, this is the worst possible time to consider hiking pay for public officials.

Any pay raises would have to be approved by the Legislature.
