The Corvallis-based tech company Strands.com is holding the inaugual edition of the Strands 5K race Saturday morning in Corvallis, including a 5K race with $13,000 in prize money at stake, a children's race and post-race party.

The five-kilometer race begins in downtown Corvallis at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The children's race will begin at 10 a.m., to be followed by an awards ceremony and post-race party outside Strands headquarters, 760 S.W. Madison Ave., across from Central Park in downtown Corvallis.

The 5K race is expected to draw a strong field of elite runners. Former All-Americans Jonathon Riley (Stanford), Stu Eagon (Wisconsin), Ian Cronin (Ohio State), Sara Hall (Stanford), Lauren Fleshman (Stanford), Meghan Armstrong (Iowa) and Sally Meyerhoff (Duke), among others, are expected to be in the field.

Prize money is available only to U.S. citizens. Winners in both the men's and women's open division will bring home $3,000. Second-place runners will get $1,500. Third place is worth $750, fourth is worth $600, fifth is worth $400 and sixth-place finishers collect $250.

All race proceeds benefit Childhelp, an organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect. Childhelp's mission is to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of abused, neglected and at-risk children through advocacy, prevention, treatment, and community outreach. Strands, founded in 2003, develops recommendation and personalization technologies to help people discover new things. For example, Strands' Social Recommender is capable of automatically learning people's tastes and how their preferences evolve over time. It can be used to generate real-time recommendations of other things the user might like.
