Brown-bag series on gardening starts

Gearing Up for Gardening 2008, a weekly brown-bag lecture series, will start Jan. 8.

The free lectures will be held from 12:10 to 1 p.m. Tuesdays through Feb. 26 at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 N.W. Monroe Ave. The series is sponsored by the Benton County Extension Master Gardeners, Corvallis-Benton County Public Library and Linn-Benton Community College.

The schedule:

Jan. 8: Vegetables 2008 - New and improved "models," with Josh Kirschenbaum, product development, Territorial Seed Co., Cottage Grove.

Jan. 15: Hardscaping Isn't Hard - The ins and outs of retaining walls and walkways for your garden, with Larry Buschman, Benton County Master Gardener.

Jan. 22: Little Effort with Big Returns - Requirements for low-maintenance home landscape with Hetty Versteege, Nova Garden Design of Corvallis, and Benton County Master Gardener.

Jan. 29: Going Native! - Discover the art and science of growing native plants with Matthew Blakeley-Smith, president, Corvallis Chapter, Native Plant Society of Oregon.

Feb. 5: Off the Beaten Fruit Path - Unusual fruits for the Willamette Valley with Jim Gilbert, Northwoods Nursery/One Green World, Molalla.

Feb. 12: Beautiful Invaders - Ornamental noxious weeds of Western Oregon with Beth Myers-Shenai, Oregon Department of Agriculture/Plant Division, Salem.

Feb. 19: Gems of the Shade - What to plant in your garden's darkest corners with Darren Morgan, manager, Shonnard's Nursery, Philomath.

Feb. 26: Many-legged Garden Friends - Beneficial insects: a non-toxic approach to solving your "bug blues" with Vidya Schalk, Benton County Master Gardener.
