Beauty college holds cancer benefit

Phagans' Beauty College will hold a Marathon Service Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Half of all proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Phagans' holds similar Marathon Days two to four times a year with the objective to have every student attain a $60 service goal for the day. The events help to educate to students as to a typical day as a licensed professional in a cosmetology career and to teach the students to support the community that supports them.

Restaurant preps for turkey meal

Big River Restaurant will provide Thanksgiving Day dinner this year for anyone in the community. Everyone is invited to come to dinner between 1 and 4 p.m. Nov. 23.

Tickets are free and can be obtained at Community Outreach, St. Mary's Stone Soup, and We Care. Oven-roasted turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes and all the fixings will be provided, along with nonalcoholic beverages.

Volunteers are needed to help prep, serve and clean up. To volunteer call Phillip Peterson, event coordinator at the restaurant, 757-0694.

Meetings guide work at coast refuges

The Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex has started a review of the wildlife, habitat and public-use activities on Cape Meares, Oregon Islands, and Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuges.

Five open houses will be held in communities along the Oregon Coast in November to seek comments from the public, government agencies, elected officials, tribes and conservation organizations. The 15-year Comprehensive Conservation Plan will guide management decisions.

The meetings will be Nov. 1 at the Newport High School Boone Center Room; Nov. 2 at the Oceanside Community Center; Nov. 8 at Cannon Beach Elementary School; Nov. 14 at the Brookings High School cafeteria; and Nov. 15 at Bandon High School. All meetings will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Alsea holds fall art event

ALSEA - The "Fall Bounty of Art" will bring an array of photography, paintings and candles to the Alsea School gym from

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Alsea Valley Artisans, a group of artists and crafty people that formed this year, hopes to turn the art show and sale into an annual event.

Adair Village seeks sign ideas

ADAIR VILLAGE - The city of Adair Village is seeking ideas on entry signs to the town.

Concepts should be submitted to City Hall no later than 4:30 p.m. Nov. 20.

The signs should depict the character of the city and will be prominently displayed on Northeast Arnold Avenue facing Highway 99W.

The council has funding to pay for the signs and installation.

Color concepts should be put on 8 ½ by 11-inch paper for consideration.

Camp Adair author to speak

SALEM - In honor of Veterans Day, the Mission Mill Museum in Salem will host a presentation by John Baker, who authored a book on Camp Adair, the former Army training center near Adair Village.

The talk begins at the museum's Dye House at noon Nov. 10.

The cost is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $4 for kids, but veterans can attend and tour the museum for free.

Baker's book is "Camp Adair: The Story of a World War II Cantonment." It captures the history of the base, once the second-largest city in Oregon, and the men who trained there.
