In brief: Guard accepts gift cards for families

Posted: Thursday, February 8, 2007 12:00 am

Those who want to support families of Oregonians serving in Iraq with the Army National Guard have a "Cards for Guards" program.

The program has existed for two years, said Becky Cartier of Lake Oswego, who helps encourage donations.

People can purchase a gift card for any amount from a favorite store. Gift cards from grocery stores and department stores are appreciated.

The cards can be mailed to the Oregon National Guard to be distributed to needy families. Many of the soldiers are the breadwinners of their family so some families are having financial problems, program organizers say.

Mail cards to: Public Affairs Office, Oregon National Guard, P.O. Box 14350, Salem, OR 97309.

What's it like to live north of campus?

The Gazette-Times is hosting a community meeting for residents of the neighborhoods north of campus (College Hill, north College Hill and College Hill West) at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, at Harding Center, 510 N.W. 31st. St. The meeting will end at 9 p.m.

Ward 4 City Councilor Dan Brown will be present, as will representatives from the newspaper.

We're interested in hearing about issues important to people living adjacent to Oregon State University. What's the best part of being so close to campus, in an area rich with history? What are some problems your neighborhood is facing? How can the city, and your neighbors, help?

Board considers 'grade-less' system

ALSEA - The Alsea School Board will consider a proposal on a "grade-less" system during its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the school.

Under the system, students would progress by skill level, not age. Kids would still get As, Bs and Cs on their report cards, though.

The proposal, if approved, would impact first through sixth grade only starting in September, and then expand through eighth grade in the spring of 2008.
