MCMINNVILLE - Linfield College fall dean's list: Ryan Gerdes of Corvallis; Emily Helpenstell of Corvallis; Sten Morgan of Corvallis; and Makaira Coblentz of Corvallis.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington fall president's list: Katie Brickman, freshman majoring in Spanish and education. Brickman is a 2005 graduate and valedictorian of Crescent Valley High School.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Butler University fall dean's list: Kristin Jones of Corvallis, Jordan College of Fine Arts.

TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute fall dean's list: Sophia Stehr of Corvallis.

TACOMA, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran University fall dean's list: Cellen Coakley of Corvallis; Kara Freeman of Corvallis; Bre' Greenmen of Corvallis; Andrew Schwartz of Corvallis; Bradley Stieger of Corvallis; and Caitlyn Zwang of Corvallis.

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University fall dean's list: Victoria Larson of Corvallis, School of Communication.

College graduates

These students from the Corvallis area have graduated from their respective colleges and universities:

MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Montana fall 2005: Kyle Gallagher, bachelor's degree in history. Gallagher is a graduate of Crescent Valley High School and the son of Tim and Mimi Gallagher of Corvallis.

Military news

Navy Seaman Brittany Hanan, daughter of Stephen Nolan of Corvallis, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Hanan is a 2000 graduate of Sheldon High School of Eugene, and a 2004 graduate of University of Oregon.

Army Spec. Travino Delgato Cordova II, 2002 graduate of Corvallis High School, has returned to the United States after being deployed to an overseas forward operating location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Cordova, an information system analyst/operator with three years of military service, is assigned to the 210th Forward Support Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, Watertown, N.Y. He is the son of Denise Ann Cordova of Monroe.

Oregon Symphony Young Musicians

S. Patrick Yun of Cheldelin Middle School tied for third place in the Oregon Symphony's 26th annual Vernon L. Wiscarson Young Musicians Competition held at Western Oregon University. Yun studies piano with Rosanne Smith of Corvallis.

Other talented musicians in the competition from Corvallis were pianists Michael Sheng and Evan Wu, and Justin Chi, viola.

Mckee awarded presidential fellow

Anna Mckee of Corvallis is a recipient of the Presidential Graduate Fellow award at the University of Georgia, Athens, Ga. The prestigious, highly competitive award provides an annual stipend of $22,000. Mckee is working toward a Ph.D. in conservation genetics in the Department of Forest Resources and Wildlife. Her research will focus on sea turtles. She is a graduate of Corvallis High School and the daughter of Wendy Mckee of Corvallis and Art Mckee of Polson, Mont.

Cheldelin wins

at MathCounts

The Cheldelin Middle School MathCounts team took first place in the regional competition Feb. 11 in Newport. Ashbrook Independent School took second place and Newport Middle School took third place. Franklin and Waldport middle schools also participated in the competition.

The official Cheldelin team of Brian Son, Evan Wu , Frank Liu and Garrett Egan qualified for the state competition, as well as Brodie Taylor, who qualified as an individual. The state MathCounts competition will be held March 4 at Oregon State University. Winners at state will advance to the national competition to be held May 11 through May 14 in Arlington, Va.

Brian Son took first place in the contest individually, Evan Wu was second, Frank Liu was third and Brodie Taylor was fifth. Other students representing Cheldelin in the competition included Chad Newbry, Joe Newbry and Brian Qian. The coach of the Cheldelin team is Anne Ulstad.

The local competition was sponsored by Georgia-Pacific in Toledo and run by the Willamette Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Oregon.
