A 21-year-old woman was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon after being waved across Northwest Ninth Street by one motorist who stopped for her - and then immediately being struck by another passing car.
According to Lt. Dave Henslee of the Corvallis Police Department, Celene L. Christensen of Corvallis was on the east sidewalk of Ninth Street, waiting to cross the road and continue west on Polk Avenue. Polk intersects with Ninth Street at two different points in the location, forming a sort of backwards "z" shaped intersection. A crosswalk is located between the two branches of Polk, slightly north of Christensen's location.
Henslee said that a northbound vehicle in the lane closest to the east sidewalk stopped to let Christensen cross. The driver of a vehicle in the left northbound lane, however, said he did not see Christensen, and his car struck her as she rode across the street.
Police said Derek A. Holman, 21, of Corvallis, was the driver of the 2001 Oldsmobile that struck Christensen. She hit the windshield of the car. Her bike was thrown forward, into the crosswalk. She was not wearing a helmet.
Henslee said the collision appeared to be an accident.
"At this point, we are not issuing citations," he said.
Corvallis Fire Department medics transported Christensen to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. She was listed there in good condition Wednesday evening.
Northwest Ninth Street was closed for about three hours while investigators from the Corvallis Police Department and the Benton County Sheriff's Department and members of a multi-agency accident reconstruction team worked the accident scene.
