An early morning fire in a trash can resulted in the evacuation of an Oregon State University residence hall.

According to information from the Corvallis Fire Department, at about 12:30 a.m. a female student discovered a small fire in a trash can in the fourth-floor women's bathroom of Wilson Hall, at Southwest Adams Avenue and 13th Street.

The resident assistant activated the fire alarm and used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames.

The six-story building had been mostly evacuated by the time firefighters arrived. No one was injured. Damage was limited to the trash can and a nearby wall.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Oregon State Police and the Corvallis Fire Department.

"We're looking at a couple of different possible scenarios regarding this fire," said Jim Patton, fire prevention officer with the Corvallis Fire Department.

The bathroom was closed for the night until it could be cleaned.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact Oregon State Police at 541-737-3010.
