An Albany laminate manufacturing plant was damaged by fire Monday afternoon.

Albany firefighters were called to the one-alarm fire at Panolam Industries located at 3030 S.W. Calapooia St. about 4:45 p.m. They arrived to see thick, black smoke pouring from the building, according to spokeswoman Wanda Omdahl.

The manager of Panolam Industries tried using several fire extinguishers to douse the fire while other employees called 911. The building and its contents were valued together at $3 million; damage was estimated at $25,000.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
