A Benton County inmate appearing in court Wednesday for a hearing allegedly tried to escape custody while being transported back to the jail, according to a sheriff deputy’s report.

Donny Lee Smith, 31, of Corvallis, is charged with third-degree attempted escape and obstructing governmental or judicial administration, both misdemeanors.

Smith was appearing in court on a probation violation, said Undersheriff Greg Ridler. He said Smith was handcuffed at the time of the alleged attempted escape.

At about 7 p.m., deputies were escorting Smith back to the jail and were in the basement of the courthouse when Smith allegedly ran from the elevator to an outside door, the report states. The door was locked and deputies were able to take Smith to the jail without further incident.
