Ruth Smyth Marrs, 93, died of natural causes Wednesday, June 3, 2009, in Corvallis.
Mrs. Marrs was born April 26, 1916, in Tallassee, Ala., to N.O. and Florence Smyth. She graduated with honors from Auburn University in 1937. She became a laboratory technician, working many years at Santa Rosa County Hospital in Milton, Fla., and Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. Mrs. Marrs received numerous awards for her excellence in the medical field.
She was a member of the Methodist church and many other charitable organizations. She enjoyed reading, travel, crossword puzzles, conservation and archaeology.
Survivors include her daughter, Priscilla Marrs Newberger of Corvallis; son, John Clarke Marrs of San Diego; son-in-law, Stuart Newberger of Corvallis; granddaughter, Florence Newberger Turnour of Long Beach, Calif.; grandson-in-law, Steven Turnour of Long Beach; and two great-grandsons, Benjamin and Stuart Turnour.
A memorial gathering will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at Timberhill Place, 989 N.W. Spruce Ave., where she had resided the past 12 years and enjoyed the excellent care. Another gathering will be held at a later date in Auburn, Ala., where she had also lived, and where many of her relatives and friends now live.
