Aug. 25, 1947 - Oct. 21, 2008
Dave Moore passed away at his home in Corvallis, where he had lived since 1980.
Dave is survived by his wife Kathryn; son, Marine Corporal Daniel Moore, currently stationed in Iraq; and brothers Stephen and Michael, and sisters Rebecca and Theresa, all of Portland. He also had numerous and much-loved nieces and nephews.
Dave attended Oregon State University, where he earned a degree in civil engineering in 1971. He followed that degree with a Master of Science in computer science education and a standard teaching certificate in advanced mathematics, both in 1985. He later earned a basic administrative certificate (for education) through the University of Oregon in 1993. During his undergraduate years at OSU, Dave was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and was on the varsity crew team. During his high school years, Dave was also active in sports and lettered in swimming.
Dave's first job in education was as a middle-school teacher in the Beaverton School District. After seven years of teaching he found his interest turning to the use of technology (especially computers) in the classroom. He then transferred to the Linn Benton Lincoln Educational Service District in Albany and, at that time (1980), he and Kathryn moved to Corvallis. After that move, Dave's professional career focused on the preparation of teachers for using classroom technology. He was one of the founding members of the Northwest Council for Computers in Education and was president of that organization from 1982 to 1983. In 1986-87, Dave was the ESD's Distinguished Teacher. During the 1980s, Dave occasionally taught classes for Linn-Benton Community College. In 1984, he was honored by the community college as an Outstanding Community Education Teacher.
Outside the office, Dave enjoyed travel, golfing, camping, reading, music and playing his guitar. He had a special passion for education for all, computers and electronic equipment, fly fishing and jazz.
After his retirement he worked part-time for OSU developing the "Taste of College Program." This program targeted high school seniors who would not ordinarily have been able to attend college. The program brought them to OSU for a few weeks during the summer where they earned a college credit, learned about college life, and, most important, formed a cohort group where they encouraged each other to continue their experience with higher education. Dave treasured a letter he received from a parent during his first year with the program stating, "You've changed my daughter's life forever."
Dave will forever be remembered by his family and friends as a devoted husband and father and a truly gentle man. A memorial service for Dave's family and friends will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Benton County Clubhouse/Valley Catering, 6097 N.E. Ebony Lane, Corvallis.
For those who wish to make donations in Dave's memory, please make them to the Special Clients' Needs Fund at the Children's Farm Home and send to McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N.W. Fifth St., Corvallis, OR 97330, 541-757-8141. Online condolences may be extended to the family via: www.mchenryfuneralhome.com.
