April 12, 1914 - Aug. 28, 2008

Janice Fraser Moore passed away early Thursday morning at Good Neighbor Care in Eugene at the age of 94.

Janice was born to Peter Walton and Ethel Porter Fraser in Black River, N.Y., on April 12, 1914. She was raised in Black River, graduating from Black River High School, and then attended Potsdam Normal School (now known as The State University of New York at Potsdam). After graduating, Janice began her teaching career in a one room school house in rural Northern New York. She lived with her student's families and walked or rode on the milk wagon to school in time to start the fires.

Janice's roommate in college, Isabelle Bell, introduced her to her brother, Howard David Moore. He became the love of her life, and they were married Dec. 21, 1940, in Black River, N.Y.

After moving 13 times because of her husband's jobs, they settled in Canton, N.Y., to raise their four children. Janice returned to teaching at Canton Central School, where she became known for her work with students who had difficulty reading. She also worked with student teachers from SUNY Potsdam and was given the Master Teacher Award by the president of the university for her many teaching successes.

Fulfilling a dream of hers, Janice and Howard retired to Florida where they made good friends, played a lot of bridge, entertained visitors and traveled the country visiting their children. Howard David died in 1989, and Janice continued to live in Florida until 2000, when she moved to Corvallis to be near her daughters, Patty and Christine. She was a member of the Corvallis First Presbyterian Church.

Janice is survived by her children and their partners, Patty Moore Kincaid and James Drivas of Eugene, Kathryn Moore Hammonds and Toney Hammonds of Titusville, Fla., Christine Jane Moore and Raymond Hartnett of Corvallis, William F. Moore and Donna Moore of Panama City, Fla.; her grandchildren Jess David Kincaid and Lisa of Vancouver, B.C., Lara Kincaid Salgado and Tono Salgado of Eugene, Jay David Moore of Corvallis, and Amanda Victoria Moore of Pensacola, Fla.; and her nieces and their families Polly Case Belfour and her husband, Marvin, of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, and Gayle Fraser Kellenberger of Laurel, Mont.

Preceding Janice in death were her parents, Walt and Ethel Fraser; her brother, Major Gaylord Fraser; her sister, Sara Fraser Case; her husband, Howard David Moore; her nephew, Peter Case, and his family; and her great-grandchild Daniel David Salgado-Kincaid.

Donations can be made in Janice's name to the MS Society or the Corvallis First Presbyterian Church in care of Musgrove's Family Mortuary, 1152 Olive St., Eugene, OR, 97401.

A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the First Presbyterian Church, 114 S.W. Eighth St., Corvallis.

Janice's ashes will be laid to rest beside her husband in New York next summer.
