James C. Howland passed away at the age of 92 on Aug. 28, because of complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 9, at the First Presbyterian Church in Corvallis. A reception will follow from 3 to 5 p.m. at the CH2M/Hill Alumni Center on the Oregon State University campus.
A native of Oregon City, he graduated from Oregon City High School, Oregon State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1991, he received an honorary doctorate from Linfield College.
Jim served in the South Pacific with the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he returned to Oregon and joined with Holly Cornell, Burke Hayes and Fred Merryfield to form Cornell, Howland, Hayes and Merryfield, now CH2M/Hill.
He was active in many civic organizations, including the Madison Avenue Task Force and the Corvallis Riverfront Commission. Jim Howland was a Trustee Emeritus of Linfield College, and also served on the Board of Trustees for the Linfield Research Institute, which included a term as chairman. Jim enjoyed tennis, jogging, hiking, sailing and silk screen printing. His interests included public art, bridges and municipal betterment. Jim and Ruth formerly owned the Pegasus Gallery in Corvallis.
Jim married Ruth Meisenhelder of York, Pa., in 1941.
He is survived by his wife; four children, daughter, Joyce Howland of Alfred Station, N.Y.; sons, Eric Howland and his wife, Julie Shaull, of Madison, Wis., Mark Howland of Somerville, Mass., and Peter Howland of McMinnville; five grandsons, Ben Fernandes and his wife, Becky, of Godmanchester, England, Von Fernandes of Washington, D.C., Corin Buchanan-Howland and his wife, Katie, of Madison, Wis., Thomas Howland of Jackson, Wyo., and Edmund Howland of Somerville, Mass.; and one great-granddaughter, Sophia Fernandes. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur C. and Sade Chase Howland, and a sister, Elizabeth Howland Officer.
The family suggests remembrances be made to the Madison Avenue Task Force of Corvallis, the First Presbyterian Church of Corvallis, or the James C. Howland Endowed Scholarship Fund at Linfield College in McMinnville.
