Nov. 18, 1905 - July 1, 2008

Agnes Marie Frederika Garling was born at home on her family's farm near La Porte City, Iowa. She started parochial school at age four in Jubilee, Iowa, and then attended St. Paul Lutheran Church Parochial School after her family moved to Waverly, Iowa.

Agnes graduated from old Waverly High School in 1925. She said she wished she could have been like her brother Luvern, who did not need to bring his books home to study. She began nursing training at Park Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, later that fall. She graduated in 1928.

After receiving her nursing license, she was night supervisor at Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and also worked as a private-duty nurse.

On Sept. 17, 1929, Agnes married William A. Adix, whom she had been friends with for a number of years. They were married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly.

Their honeymoon was spent traveling to Texas, where William began his ministry as a pastor in the Lutheran Church. In 1931 they returned to Iowa, where William served in a number of churches throughout the state before settling in Ankeny, Iowa, in the early 1970s.

Agnes gave herself fully to family life, happily raising their four children: William, Robert, Carolyn and Marilyn. She actively participated in the role as pastor's wife and enjoyed serving their congregations. She used her musical abilities for piano playing, taught Sunday School classes and helped her husband in many other ways.

She continued to live in Ankeny following William's death in 1980.

Facing increasing limitations due to a stroke and macular degeneration, Agnes sold her home in 1996 and moved to an assisted living apartment near the home of her daughter, Marilyn, in Corvallis.

She passed away peacefully Tuesday morning at Corvallis Caring Place. She was 102.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Luvern Garling; and sister, Eva Brandenburg.

Survivors include her children, Bill Adix of Portland, Bob Adix of Rowlett, Texas; Carolyn Biedermann of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Marilyn Bervin of Corvallis.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, July 8, in Ankeny, Iowa. Committal will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa.

Local arrangements are with DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home and Crematory, www.demossdurdan.com.
