Dec. 10, 1926 - March 10, 2009

Polly Anna "Mombo" Brooks of Blodgett died at her home on Tuesday, March 10. She was 82. She was born Dec. 10, 1926, in Lebanon to Elmer L. and Winifred E. Casteel Nichols.

Polly was well-rounded with many interests and abilities. She had a variety of occupations throughout her life that she enjoyed. She was a civilian nurse during World War II, was the first woman to be licensed as a rural route bus driver, worked as a floor supervisor in the fish processing industry and was called upon from time to time to administer emergency treatment to injured workers. She was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in her yard and, of course, reading and watching Western movies. She may have seemed somewhat opinionated from time to time but she was focused, determined and forgiving.

She was a member of Gray's River Valley Lions Club in Washington.

She is survived by her sons, Ron Brooks Jr. and Bill Carpenter and his wife, Jennifer; daughters Shirlee Badger, Peggy and her husband, Rich Davis, and Sandy Brooks; sister, Addreen Nichols; brother, Ray Nichols and his wife, Marylee; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Ves Carpenter, in 1974; and her second husband, Ronald H. Brooks, in 1983; and granddaughter Anna Lee Brooks.

Graveside committal services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Rock Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in her name can be made to Gray's River Valley Lions Club. Arrangements are under the direction of Twin Oaks Funeral Home.
