Charles Smith Bennett of Portland died Sunday, Feb. 22. He was 92.

He was born Dec. 18, 1916, to William J. and Nellie Smith Bennett in Dundee.

Charles attended Oregon State College and lettered in wrestling. In 1942, he joined the Navy, where he attended Midshipmen School at Colombia University. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Honolulu and served during World War II, retiring in 1959 as Lt. Commander. Charles married Dorothy Reynolds in 1947 and retired from Georgia Pacific in 1981. He is survived by his five children, Richard Bennett of Monmouth, Patricia Burrows and Glinda Mathews of Seattle, Gloria Weinberg of Portland, and Maureen Brooks of Hillsboro; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and sister Edith Beach of Lake Oswego.

He was preceded in death by his wife; brothers, Robert, William Ralph, David and Walter Bennett; and sisters Ruth Trimble and Elizabeth Mumford.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Monday, March 2, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
