Herbert Heublein, 81, passed away at home on March 1, 2018, in Corvallis, surrounded by family.
Also known as Herbie by family and close friends, Herb was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He graduated from Silverton High School in 1954 and then attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business in 1959.
Herb served in the US Navy for three years.
In 1971, he received a Master of Arts in Education from San Francisco State University.
After receiving his degree, Herb began teaching at Lincoln Elementary in Corvallis. His career in education spanned 25 years, teaching at many elementary schools in Corvallis, as well as one year in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Herb’s love of nature, travel, and motorcycles took him throughout the US and countries around the world. His experiences included a nine-month motorcycle trip through Western Europe, a 300-mile hike along the Oregon and California portions of the Pacific Crest Trail, an annual two-week motorcycle road trip with friends, and numerous international trips with his wife, Patty.
Other beloved activities included puzzling, hiking, birding, and exploring the nature and beauty of his home state of Oregon. Sharing a beautiful home and garden they restored together, Herbie spent the last two decades loving life with his wife, Patty and their two cats, Zeke and Shannie.
Herb was committed to helping others and spent many of his later years volunteering with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Western Pond Turtle rehabilitation program, and at the Corvallis Food Bank.
A gentle giant and a gentleman, Herb was truly a kind soul. Herb was never without a sense of humor and insisted on looking at the bright side of life. He will be missed.
