June 10, 1929 — November 26, 2017
Jane Webster Newton was born on June 10, 1929 in Beloit, Wisconsin to Donald Everett Webster and Mabel Whaley Webster.
She passed gloriously into heaven on November 26, 2017, at home surrounded by her family after a prolonged stretch of congestive heart failure.
Jane attended grade school in Madison, Wisconsin, Washington, DC and some in Turkey where her father was in the American Diplomatic Service for 20 years. She attended high school in Claremont, California. She attended Scripps College in Pomona, California, and then went to nursing school at Columbia University in New York City where she earned her BSN in 1952. Years later, she completed a degree at OSU in Elementary Education around 1970.
On October 30, 1954, Jane and Mike Newton married in Vermont and completed 63 wonderful years together.
Jane worked for two years as a Registered Nurse, then was a housewife and full time volunteer in many organizations, including League of Women Voters and Planned Parenthood (50 plus years ago). She worked on many local and state political projects, served as a Hospice Volunteer for Benton Hospice and Inter-Faith Caregivers for 30 plus years.
She was a spirited and avid deep thinker and letter writer to the Gazette Times on her many issues of passion. She was nearly a columnist!
Jane was a devoted Christian and this impacted her love of people and God passionately. She was a great mother to us and to many graduate students and others. She was a beloved wife and a treasured friend.
She was the original conservationist, and made frugality a game. She loved this community and this nation and was generous to the depths of her heart.
We will all miss her wisdom, integrity and rigor greatly.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Newton; son, Dan Newton; daughter, Lindy Newton; and son, Tom Newton; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all loved greatly.
Donations to Community Outreach Inc., of Corvallis (www.communityoutreachinc.org) would be welcome in lieu of flowers and with gratefulness.
