March 4, 1922 — Oct. 22, 2012

Lola LeNell Rae was born to Elton and Tress Rae on March 4, 1922, in Salem.

She was raised in Salem, enjoyed roller skating whenever she could, and graduated from Salem High School. She attended Willamette University and graduated from the University of Oregon. Her first job was teaching math in Condon. She moved back to Eugene to teach at the university. She met Curtis O. Wolfenbarger in one of her classes, and they married Jan. 4, 1947.

They lived in Eugene until moving to Corvallis in 1951 to run Gas Heat, a propane business that later changed to Suburban Gas. Both were active in the PTA at Lincoln School, and the Moose Lodge. Lola was a leader for Brownie troops and made princess cakes after taking a cake-decorating class. She rarely made it through an afternoon without a Coca-Cola.

Lola worked for Corvallis School District 509J from 1964 to 1984. When Crescent Valley High School opened, she became the athletic director’s secretary, a position she kept until her retirement. She was involved in the Corvallis Senior Center and led the Alzheimer’s Support Group; she also volunteered for Dial-A-Bus.

Traveling to Hawaii and Mexico were good trips, but the Oregon Coast and Clear Lake on the McKenzie were special places for the family. All of Lola’s girls shared trips and time traveling with her. Lola loved to swim with her early-morning buddies at Osborn Aquatic Center, and then would hurry to Fitness Over 50 for circuit exercise. She was passionate about remembering birthdays, anniversaries and any other special occasion with a card to friends.

She was preceded in death by a grandson (Curtis Michael Halliday) and her husband, Curtis (1990). Lola is survived by three daughters, Sandra (Bruce) Adams of Keizer, Lynda (Lee Schroeder) of Corvallis, and Cheryl (Michael Halliday) of Wilsonville; one granddaughter, Kimberly (Gleaman) Burks of Albany; a great-grandson, Caleb; and a great-granddaughter, Sierra.

Following her wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no services. Donations can be made to the Senior Citizen Foundation of Benton County, Inc., P.O. Box 903, Corvallis, OR 97339.
