May 15, 1939 — June 6, 2013

Richard Carter, 74, passed away from cancer on June 6 at his home in Prescott, Wash.

Richard was born on May 15, 1939, in Harlingen, Texas, to Porter and Lillie Carter.

As a young child, Richard and his family moved to the Pacific Northwest, where they settled at Ayer, Wash. Richard and his siblings, Freda, Ron and Bill, grew up at Ayer, located on the Snake River, before the dams were built. The river was wild in those days and the Carter kids had many wonderful experiences together.

In 1958, Richard graduated from high school in Prescott, where he lettered in football and baseball. Also in 1958, he married Patty Farmer. They had three children, Mike, Greg and Karin.

Richard started working for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1959 and worked as a brakeman for 42 years before retiring in 2001.

Richard married Jodi Kennedy of Corvallis on Jan. 18, 1979, in Walla Walla, Wash.

Richard learned to fish at an early age, and loved to share the many stories he had about going fishing with his father, brothers and sister. He passed his fishing knowledge to his children and grandchildren. These experiences are cherished memories for all. He also loved to camp with friends, take trips to the beach, and watch football and baseball games.

Richard loved to spend time with his family, friends, and dogs Emma, Hoss and Holle. He loved to share the stories of his childhood and had a great sense of humor with a hearty laugh.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jodi of Prescott; sons Mike Carter of Salem and Greg Carter (Dianne) of San Ramon, Calif.; daughter Karin (Chris) Bowman of Walla Walla; grandchildren Lindsey Jones (Craig), Brad Bowman (Amy), Jeremy Carter, Katie Carter and Ally Carter; great-grandchildren Kooper and Jaxon Jones; sister Freda Thompson of Walla Walla; brothers Ron Carter (Joyce) of Milton-Freewater and Bill Carter of Waitsburg, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Porter and Lillie Carter; brother-in-law Lon (Tommy) Thompson; and sister-in-law Sharon Carter.

Herring Groseclose Funeral Home will handle the funeral arrangements.

A celebration of Richard’s life will take place at 12:30 p.m. June 15 in the parish hall of St. Francis Catholic Church, 722 West Alder St., Walla Walla.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Richard Carter can be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice or Starbuck Community Church.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Richard’s very special sister-in-law, Terry Byers, for her help during his illness.
