April 18, 1981 — August 31, 2017
Spencer Ryan Higgins was born in Salem. He graduated from North Salem High School in 1999, and spent his adult life in Portland.
Spencer’s love has always been music. A member of The Valiants during high school, he danced and played the Vox organ. He loved scouring second-hand stores for music that he could spin as DJ — Alonzo Mourning Sickness.
Second only to music was his love of birds. Whitaker Ponds was a favorite spot to catch site of an egret or spy a nest filled with eggs. He would head clear across the city at rumor of a possible bird siting.
Spencer is loved and remembered for his laughter and genuine kindness by all who know him — sister and best friend Megan Higgins; parents Marilyn Walster (Sid Friedman), Lennie Higgins (Sheryl); grandparents Agnes Firth, Robert and Paulette Friedman; loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and so many dear friends.
Spencer was preceded in death by grandparents Harry Walster, Virginia and Henry Higgins, Robert Firth and cousin Jay Hajek.
Spencer’s friends lined Sandy Blvd to say goodbye as he rolled out of Portland for the last time. In a private burial on the family farm, Spencer was laid to rest.
“Spencer always had a smile for everyone, so welcoming. There was something extremely uplifting about him, and also a kind of natural beauty. Whatever realm welcomes him now is getting a real star.”
This shift is over. All the way lovely, Spencer, all the way lovely.
