Oregon State University has selected a statistician to be the next dean of the College of Science.

Sastry Pantula, a North Carolina State University statistics professor who also serves as director of the National Science Foundation’s Division of Mathematical Sciences, will step into the job on Aug. 30, succeeding interim dean Vince Remcho.

Pantula is a fellow and former president of the American Statistical Association. He also is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He has been on the North Carolina State faculty since 1982. He headed the statistics department there for eight years, and also directed the university’s Institute of Statistics.

Pantula has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata and a doctorate in statistics from Iowa State University.
