Shelter event was runaway good time

On May 15, the Jackson Street Youth Shelter held its second annual 5K fun run. What a success! We were able to raise funds and awareness for our local youth shelter.

Thank you to race-day volunteers, the Corvallis-Gazette-Times for advertising and Corvallis Radiology for sponsoring the run.

American Family Insurance and the Corvallis Clinic donated items to include in registration packets. Also contributing prizes were Adidas, Added Touches, Footwise, Trump's Hobbies, Alloa Jessee with Sunshine Generation, Red Horse Coffee Co., Hollywood Video, Valley Music, Pottery Place, The Book Bin, Super Silver, Headline Cafe, Pita Pit, Local Boyz, John and Phil's Toyota, Benders, Golden Crane, Baja Fresh, Five-Star Sports and Grempsy's.

Albertsons, Noah's Bagels, Cliff Bars, Great Harvest Bread Co. and Stoker's Vida World all donated refreshments.

Thanks also to the Jackson Street Youth Shelter Youth Board. It wouldn't have been a success without their support. My gratitude to the graduating seniors from Corvallis High School and Crescent Valley High School.

Mail carriers' food drive brought relief

The Corvallis Letter Carriers and all Corvallis Post Office employees would like to thank the Corvallis community for its generous donation to the 2004 Letter Carriers Food Drive.

The collection this year was extremely successful in the number of households donating and the volume of food given. This robust turnout is very much appreciated and will greatly aid those members of our community who are in difficult situations.

We also thank the staff of Linn-Benton Food Share for the fantastic work they perform year after year in collecting, warehousing and distributing food throughout the mid-valley.

Thanks to the many volunteers who contributed their time and personal vehicles May 8 to help us collect and transport donations to Food Share facilities.

Thrift club grant spruces up spaces

The members of the Mid-Valley Housing Plus Board offer their sincere thanks to the Oregon State University Folk Club for its donation of $509.94. We will use the funds to purchase furnishings for our mentally ill apartment renters in Corvallis.

The residents - all subsisting on Social Security income - will be able to improve their apartments with furniture, lamps, linens and kitchen items.

The OSU Folk Club Thrift Shop has made donations to 46 community organizations this year. Thanks very much to Elizabeth Spatafora, the president, and to the Folk Club committee.

Help at accident scene appreciated

I was involved in an accident just before 4 p.m. Feb. 24. It happened on Peoria Road about three miles from Corvallis. I know this is late in coming, and I apologize for that.

I was impressed by all who helped me that day: the Corvallis Fire Department, paramedics, and the Oregon state trooper who covered the accident.

The firemen/paramedics helped to keep things calmed down. Although the vehicle was on its side in the ditch, one paramedic got into the vehicle with me to make sure I didn't move and to put a protective brace on my neck.

I also want to thank the gentleman who came along just a few seconds after the collision. He got into my vehicle and made sure I didn't move while we were waiting for the emergency personnel. I didn't get his name, but I greatly appreciated his help.

Even though I wasn't badly hurt, I was shaken up. We are lucky to live in a community with such caring individuals. Thank you all.

Trillium blooming with others' help

The Trillium Family Services, Children's Farm Home campus would like to thank the following organizations for their help and support:

The community service committee of the Kiwanis Club of Corvallis, for enabling us to buy the materials to build new floating docks. Thanks also to Dave Thomas and his team for building the docks for us.

Thanks to the wonderful team from the Santiam Christian School. The 13 young ladies and an adult came to help us with several garden projects.

The Corvallis Rotary Club helped us at our annual "Denim & Diamonds" event. This is the fourth year that Brad Whiting and his team have helped us.

Thank you for community concern

Oregon State University president Edward Ray and the OSU athletic department have reacted extremely positively to the community's outrage at the unfortunate decision made (to explode nearby fireworks) during the OSU Veterinary School's annual Pet Day event.

But now, OSU joins UCLA and Stanford in forsaking fireworks for community goodwill.

Surrounding neighbors and pets will now look forward to game day with a different mindset.

Thank you for showing true community concern.

Thank you, also, to Nicole Tomps and Kristy-Ann Correa, co-chairs of the 2004 pet day and open house. While the wonderful day was overshadowed by an event beyond their control, they and their staff of volunteers did an amazing job.

Problems aside, it was a terrific pet day. Thank you, and we will be back next year.
