Police canvassed the 500 block of NW Fifth Street on Sunday to learn more about serious injuries suffered by a Corvallis woman after an apparent fall Saturday night.

Crime was ruled out as a factor in head injuries sustained by Melena L. Loftis, 35, of Corvallis. Loftis apparently fell from a second-story apartment balcony Saturday night.

While her exact condition was not released by Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Loftis is recovering in the hospital, according to Corvallis Police spokesman Dave Henslee.

Early reports said Loftis' injuries were potentially life-threatening.

An investigation into the incident found that the balcony at 635 NW Fifth St. was intact, so was not the reason Loftis tumbled to the ground.

"It just looks like she fell," Henslee said.
