COOS BAY — Finally, Santiam Christian was able to get the better of Cascade Christian when it mattered most.

Carley hit two free throws for a 40-38 lead with 1:39 left before Cascade Christian made one free throw.

Then Baugher, who hadn’t scored since the second quarter, drained a 3 to put the Eagles up 43-39 with 41 seconds left.

But Cascade Christian scored to get within 43-41 with 30 seconds left.

Carley missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 19.3 seconds left. But the Challengers missed two shots and had to foul with 3.1 seconds left.

Zeke Gilbert hit two free throws to seal the win.

Up three to start the third quarter, Cascade Christian pushed the edge to 32-27 midway through the period.

But Josh Baugher banked in a 3 to get within 32-30 with 2:27 to go in the third and Carley’s late jumper tied the game at 34 going to the fourth.

The Eagles led 12-6 in the final minute of the first but a 4-0 run late got Cascade Christian within 12-10 after one quarter. Baugher had 11 of SC’s points and was 4 for 5 from the floor, including hitting two 3s.

The Challengers carried that momentum into the second quarter and took a 19-14 lead before the Eagles got a 3 from Carley and two free throws from Josh Baugher.

But SC was unable to regain the lead and trailed 25-22 at the break.

Zach Baugher had 14 to lead the Eagles but only three in the second quarter.
