A Sweet Home man was arrested after allegedly assaulting another resident with a skateboard outside the Sweet Home Circle K early Saturday morning.
Steven Zachary Koechig, 28, was charged with first-degree assault during a brief appearance in Linn County Circuit Court on Monday afternoon. Koechig is accused of causing serious harm to the victim with a dangerous weapon, according to court paperwork.
At about 1:44 a.m. on Saturday, authorities received a call of a male who was assaulted outside the convenience store at 2405 Main St. The caller said that the male was bleeding badly, according to police logs.
Initial reports indicate that the victim was hit in the head with a skateboard, said Sgt. Jason Ogden.
The victim told authorities that a man he didn’t know walked up to him, said they needed to talk, and then attacked him, Ogden added. Reports state that the victim said he was going to have a friend take him for medical treatment, Ogden said.
A witness helped identify Koechig, who was contacted and arrested by Sweet Home Police Department officers at Thriftway, 621 Main St., at about 6:20 p.m. on Saturday.
Koechig remained lodged in the Linn County Jail on Monday night.
First-degree assault is a Measure 11 crime with a mandatory minimum sentence of seven-and-a-half years in prison.
