The International River Foundation based in Brisbane, Australia deemed the Willamette River winner of the Thiess International Riverprize, an award that recognizes sustainable programs in river management.

The Willamette River Initiative entry was submitted by Portland-based company Meyer Memorial Trust and is a group of organizations that aims to improve watershed health in the Willamette Basin.

Meyer Memorial Trust will receive $300,000 along with a grant to coordinate a program with another river basin anywhere in the world. It's major partners in the watershed improvement project include Oregon State University, University of Oregon, the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation.
