This should be intuitive rule: Biking and texting just don’t mix

I've seen plenty of people in cars talking on cell phones and being inattentive to driving.

Not until a recent morning, however, had I seen a fellow bicyclist texting a message with both hands while looking down at his cell phone. He was so lucky nobody backed out of a driveway in front of him. At least this fellow bike rider was wearing a helmet.

I relate this incident not to portray bicycling as a hazardous activity. Like many things, just be sensible and take ordinary precautions. Most of all, be observant of your surroundings, be visible yourself and watch for road hazards. Corvallis is a great place to get around on a bike!

If Earth Day last month inspired you at all to change, some of your personal behaviors to better the planet, perhaps you took the opportunity Friday to participate in National Bike to Work Day (http://www.bikeleague.org/).

In fact, why not consider making every Friday your day to bike, bus, or walk to work or school? One less car on the road, regularly one day a week, can help reduce global warming and improve your physical fitness.
