Letter: Don't confuse support for soldiers' service with support of war (Oct. 8)

Readers might be surprised that I, who support those soldiers refusing to serve when they believe to do so would be immoral, can join with columnist Pat Wray, when he is glad that support is currently shown to returning uniformed soldiers. (Column, Oct. 2, "Former soldier glad support shown now.")

What is "right" or "wrong" about killing suspected combatants in foreign countries for the sake of freedom is not so simple!

Recently, Lt. William Calley, whose unit slaughtered an entire village in Vietnam - including men, women and children - broke his silence of so many years to express regrets. His unit had done that under orders.

I do believe in defending freedoms not only for our country, but for others. With Pat Wray, I believe that combat veterans need and deserve to know that their sacrifice is appreciated.

On the other hand, dissent from our current wars is widespread. Not just some enlisted persons, but also many military officers have publicly expressed dissent. We came out of World War II and Korea justly proud of our defense of freedom. Justification for our wars in the Middle East has been much less clear. Let us honor those who served and believed in our cause as well as those who dissent!
