After reading Richard Vannice's excellent letter in the Sept. 13 Gazette-Times, my first thought was of Voltaire's pithy statement back in the 18th century, "Common sense is not so common." To those who are spending (wasting?) time talking about name changes of buildings and sports teams I say it is neither possible nor desirable to eliminate history. All we can do is educate ourselves so that perhaps the worst offenses won't be repeated. To those students at Oregon State University who are agitating for building name changes I say spend that time studying, or volunteer for a worthy cause. Misguided idealism can take on a life of its own and become a distraction from the real problems.
