I had no idea that the renaming of Oregon State University buildings would come to fruition. Undoubtedly, not a one of them was named to honor these men for the racist views they might have held. Those times were very different from today; Oregon was far from welcoming for nonwhites in those days. The naming was to honor their contributions to the university and the local area. It shouldn't have taken a working group and a subcommittee to make such a momentous blunder.
How will the new names for these building be selected? Will it be done as an acknowledgement of significant monetary gifts, as it was when Parker Stadium became Reser Stadium? Will there be scrupulous examination of each candidate for the renaming? Will we know for certain that their backgrounds contain nothing contrary to today's or the future's standard of decorum? Future generations might even judge support for Donald Trump as a disqualifying indiscretion.
