Here are two suggestions for renaming buildings on the Oregon State University campus: Pioneer Hall and Letitia Carson Lodge.
The former Benton Hall could be renamed Pioneer Hall to honor the pioneers of Benton County who put up the money for the campus.
Former Avery Lodge could be named for Letitia Carson, a free black woman, who arrived in the Soap Creek-Coffin Butte area of Benton County the same year as the Avery family. She was beloved in the community and midwife to many early settlers. In 1862 she was homestead patent No. 14 of the first 71,000 homestead patents issued in Oregon, and was only one of four women to obtain a homestead patent at that time. Naming the residence Letitia Carson Lodge seems an appropriate way to honor a very unique homesteader.
