With recent national conversation surrounding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) continuing to stir up controversy, it is essential that Ed Ray, Oregon State University and the local Corvallis community take a firm stance in favor of protection for DACA recipients.
Fear-mongering language like “chain migration” should not distract us from one of our strongest community values: commitment to forming healthy and productive family relationships with both generations past and present. The ability to form and maintain these relationships is something we all strive for. The horrifying stories of ICE officials detaining hard working community members, separating them from their family surely cannot represent our values of family connection and unity.
Being a college student carries its stresses. Fearing for the well-being of your parents and siblings should not be one of them. DACA recipients deserve the right to attend our university free from the stress of incarceration or deportation. We are all here attending OSU to increase our opportunities for future careers so we can better provide for the future partners and children we all deserve. Let our community continue to be vocal in its support of strong families and of all our students, immigrants or not.
