The driver of a pickup that killed a 70-year-old man and injured an 85-year-old man Saturday in Philomath has been arrested by the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
Ricky Ray Ferguson, 54, of Toledo, was booked and lodged at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the Benton County Jail. He was charged with first-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, reckless driving, hit-and-run vehicle-injury and tampering with evidence.
Robert Ozretich, of Corvallis, was killed on impact in the crash and taken directly to a funeral home, BCSO reported. Allan Deutsch, of Corvallis, remains Sunday in the intensive care unit at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. Both men were reportedly part of a church group that had volunteered to pick up trash along the highway.
The sheriff's office continues to seek information from people who saw Ferguson's 2004 Ford 250 pickup (Oregon license plate 377 JQR) on Jan. 12-13.
"We know Ferguson stayed in the Philomath area for a significant period of time after the incident," BCSO Sgt. David Iverson said. "He stopped at numerous roadside locations to work on his vehicle and alter its appearance."
Philomath Police said Saturday that the pickup had been seen on Fern Road and on Highway 20 near Priest Road along with Blodgett Country Store where he was found by law enforcement.
Ferguson was located within four hours of the incident with help from the community. Witnesses are asked to call Iverson at 541-766-6858 with vehicle information.
