Miyo Irie Callender age 86, died Monday, August 28, 2017, at Stoneybrook Assisted Living, where she had lived for the past six years.
Miyoko was born September 10, 1930, in Tokyo, Japan, to Ichiro Irie and Toki Kawatso. Her grandmother helped raise her while her parents managed a restaurant in Tokyo.
Miyoko was working in an office in Tokyo when she met her future husband Bill Callender, who was serving in the Marines while stationed at Camp Fuji. During their six year courtship, Bill worked at a number of shipyards in Japan for Brown Engineering, before marrying Miyoko in 1957. Shortly thereafter, they moved back to the States to follow Bill’s career while living in Staten Island, Baton Rouge and Houston.
In 2005, Miyoko and Bill moved from Houston to Philomath to be near their son and family.
Miyoko was an avid bowler and enjoyed supporting her children and grandchildren’s sporting and musical activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, in April of 2016.
Miyoko is survived by daughter, Catherine Sauls (Rolfe) of Thornton, Colorado; son, Bill Callender (Mary) of Philomath; grandchildren, Noah and Luke Sauls; Emma and Sam Callender.
No memorial service is planned.
