The third biennial Quilt Show & More is coming to the Philomath Scout Lodge Friday through Sunday.

More than 150 quilts will be on display throughout the lodge and on a “quilt walk” outside the building. A number of vendors will also be on hand with various handcrafted items. In addition, there will be quilt-related demonstrations.

The show kicks off on Friday evening with its “Sneak-a-Peek” event, which for $25 includes wine, appetizers and admission to either the Saturday or Sunday show. The regular schedule with $5 admission (children 12 and under are free) this weekend runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase in the "Quilters Courtyard." A free workshop for kids will also be staged.

A special presentation by the Quilts of Valor Foundation will take place at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Quilts will be presented to honor Philomath-area veterans who served during active wartime in an event that will include participation of local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Cake will be served after each ceremony.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a nonprofit organization that dates back to 2003 with a mission of honoring service members by covering them with a handmade quilt.

Founder Catherine Roberts, of Seaford, Delaware, established standards of excellence for the quilts.

"I knew a Quilt of Valor had to be a quality-made quilt, not a 'charity quilt.' A Quilt of Valor had to be quilted, not tied, which meant hand or machine quilting," Roberts said in a story that appears on the organization's website. "Quilts of Valor would be awarded, not just passed out like magazines or videos. A Quilt of Valor would say unequivocally, 'Thank you for your service, sacrifice, and valor' in serving our nation in combat."

Nationally, more than 167,000 quilts have been awarded since the program's inception, including more than 2,200 this month alone.

The Quilt Show & More committee is making a quilt to raffle off and tickets will be on sale this weekend. The winner will be drawn in February at the Heart to Heart event at the lodge.
