The Philomath High School swim team qualified in three individual events and three relays for this weekend's state championships.

Competing Friday and Saturday in the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 3 meet at Albany, Warriors junior James Dye added a first-place medal to his hardware collection by winning the 500-yard freestyle. Dye also placed third in the 100 butterfly and goes to state in both events.

Dye was never seriously challenged in the 500 free with a time of 5:18.94, almost 10 seconds faster than the runner-up. Dye's time ranks seventh among those qualifying for state.

"My game plan for him, he's an amazing competitor, but I wanted him to focus on his other three events (100 fly and two relays) because they were going to be harder races," PHS coach Marissa Eng said.

With that in mind, Dye might be able to turn in a faster time in the 500 at state. He's also been trying to shake off illness in recent weeks and was not 100 percent for districts.

"We're going to rest him up and save and taper for state and see what he does," Eng said. "I have faith he's going to step it up."

Dye's time in the 100 fly came in at 58.21 seconds, which was 1.61 seconds behind the winner and 1.11 seconds faster than his time during Friday's preliminaries. He heads to state with the ninth-best time.

PHS junior Amity Coon also got into state with a time of 1:14.92 in the 100 breaststroke. Coon placed third in the event and qualified for the trip to Gresham with the 11th-best time among all district results.

"She has put some serious offseason training in and really committed to it and it really showed today," Eng said. "She's been battling sickness, too. But she had an outstanding day in all four of her races."

Coon's prelim time in the 100 breaststroke Friday was 1:17.60 and she bettered her time in finals by 2.68 seconds.

Philomath qualified two relays for state with its performances in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle. Senior Jensen Davis, junior Tristan Pindell, Dye and junior Jeremy Schaffer came in with a time of 1:53.47 to place third at districts, an improvement of 2.26 seconds over the group's time on the first day.

The Warriors head into state prelims with the seventh-best time. Alternates will be junior Brandon Enghauser, sophomore Quinton Garcia, sophomore Brennan Provance and freshman Eli McLennan.

The 200 freestyle relay took third at districts as well, sprinting the distance in 1:39.20, more than 2 seconds faster than the foursome's prelims time. Davis, Enghauser, Pindell and Dye all swam legs. At state, Philomath will enter prelims with the 10th-best time.

The freestyle alternates are junior Jeremy Schaffer, Garcia, Provance and McLennan.

For the girls, Philomath's 200-yard medley relay qualified for state with an at-large spot. Freshman Melia Morton, Coon, senior Rachel Hindman and senior Miriam Coskey came in with a time of 2:08.12 to place third.

The relay had placed sixth during Friday's prelims to just qualify for the final spot in the A final. The team's time in finals was 2.35 seconds faster than Friday.

The four girls that swim on the relay at state may differ from who went at districts. Coaches will on occasion change the lineups around depending on various factors. Listed as alternates are sophomore Maggie Ross, sophomore Hannah Hernandez, junior Kena Bacho and sophomore Shaylee Charley.

In all out of Friday's prelims, 22 of Philomath's 27 swimmers qualified for A and B finals on the second day.

"That's really crazy," Eng said. "That's a very high percentage."

Among the other boys' results, Pindell had a third-place showing in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.36, bettering his prelim time by nearly 3 seconds. Pindell also made the A finals in the 50 freestyle and placed fifth in 24.52.

Davis qualified for A finals in two races and placed fifth in both the 200 individual medley (2:26.27) and 100 backstroke (1:08.22). In the 200 IM, he bettered his prelim time by just under 5 seconds.

Enghauser was sixth in the 100 freestyle (58.30) and McLennan sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:13.58). The 400 freestyle relay with Garcia, McLennan, Schaffer and Enghauser placed fifth in 4:06.60.

Garcia had a notable improvement in the 200 freestyle, Eng said, by cutting about 14 seconds off his personal record during the two days of the competition. Enghauser also had significantly faster times in that same event.

In the team standings, the boys placed third with 196 points behind Sweet Home (273) and Salem Academy (270).

"Logan (Parker, assistant coach) and I are so pumped, so proud of how they all swam collectively, not just as one person," Eng said. "This year, the entire team put in hard work and dedication and it showed. It was just amazing and we couldn't have asked for a more cohesive group of kids."

For the girls, Coskey placed sixth in the 50 freestyle (28.63) and Morton was sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:12.19). The 200 freestyle relay with Hernandez, Ross, Morton and Coskey placed fourth in 1:55.58.

"Melia Morton was really able to get her feet wet as a freshman, which I'm excited to see how she progresses over the next couple of years," Eng said while highlighting some top performances. "Hannah Hernandez and Maggie Ross just had some outstanding swims."

Eng also singled out Coskey for being a clutch swimmer for the team, calling her "Miss Consistent," and excelling in the role of team captain.

Hindman had some tough luck in the 200 freestyle. During Friday's prelims, she missed advancing to the A final by just three-hundredths of a second. Than during the B finals, she turned in a time of 2:24.56, which would've placed her fifth in the A race.

The girls were fourth in the team results with 156 points with Sweet Home (310), Salem Academy (281) and Sisters (159) occupying the top three spots.

"A whole lot of other coaches noticed Philomath stepping up and racing hard on Day 2," Eng said. "Historically, we haven't always been the best Day 2 racers but with a smaller group, we were able to get some hard practices in."

The 4A/3A/2A/1A state meet begins at 1 p.m. Friday and 12:15 p.m. Saturday at the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center in Gresham.
