PHS softball: Carrie Lillis

Philomath's Carrie Lillis, seen here last season, hit a grand slam in Monday's 9-3 win over Sweet Home.

The Philomath High School softball team opened the season Monday with a 9-3 victory over Sweet Home.

Playing on their home field, the Warriors pounded out 13 hits while limiting the Huskies to just four hits.

Senior Carrie Lillis and freshman Kamden Combs both saw time in the circle. Lillis allowed one hit before Combs entered in the fourth. Combs, in her high school debut, allowed three hits and struck out five.

Philomath took a 4-0 lead in the third inning on a grand slam by Lillis. Hannah Williams opened the third with a single and then Riley Weaver and Amie Russell followed with walks to load the bases. After an out on the infield fly rule, Lillis followed with a one-out homer.

Sweet Home got on the board in the top of the sixth to pull to within 4-3. But Philomath countered with five in the bottom half to put the game away.

Williams, Lillis, Combs and Kaili Saathoff each had two hits.

Philomath (1-0) is scheduled to host Junction City Wednesday afternoon.
