PHILADELPHIA - The Washington Nationals have acquired catcher Jamie Burke, a former Oregon State baseball and football letterman, from the Seattle Mariners for cash.

The 37-year-old Roseburg native lettered in baseball as a third baseman in 1992-93 and in football as a kicker from 1990-92.

He is a career .282 hitter with three homers and 38 RBIs in 184 games over seven seasons with the Angels, White Sox and Mariners.

This season he hit .122, with a homer and an RBI, in 13 games for the Mariners and .284, with no homers and 11 RBIs, in 22 games at triple-A Tacoma.

The Nationals also placed catcher Jesus Flores on the 60-day disabled list on Thursday. Flores had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder on Wednesday. Also, catcher Wil Nieves left Thursday's game at Philadelphia with a hamstring injury, leaving the Nationals with Josh Bard as their only healthy catcher.
