On a day when the Oregon State wrestling program paid tribute to its illustrious past, the present and future looked pretty promising, too.
The Beavers unveiled a new pennant honoring their eight NCAA champions, and new banners to National Wrestling Hall of Famers Les Gutches and Robin Reed prior to Sunday's duals with No. 13 Wisconsin and No. 8 Boise State at Gill Coliseum on Sunday. Perhaps inspired, the Beavers won the final four bouts to knock off the Badgers 22-13 before falling 25-7 to the Broncos, who outdistanced OSU to win the 2009 Pacific-10 Conference championship.
"We came in unranked so it's exciting for us, it's a big win to beat the No. 13 team pretty good," said junior 184-pounder Brice Arand, whose come-from-behind 7-5 decision over Travis Ruff gave OSU a 16-13 advantage that sophomores Chad Hanke (197) and Clayton Jack (hwt) expanded with convincing decisions in their bouts.
"It's a big win for us and for West Coast wrestling. We just want to establish Oregon State wrestling, we want to put ourselves in the national scene, establish ourselves early in the season so people are scared to wrestle us."
The Badgers, ninth at the 2009 NCAA championships, had three wrestlers ranked 10th or better; OSU had four, but none ranked higher than 13th.
Arand gave up a takedown just before the end of the second period and trailed 3-2. Ruff started the third period on the bottom, sandwiched escapes around a takedown and still led 5-4 with about a minute left. However, Arand got a go-ahead takedown and a point for riding time to send the Beavers ahead for good.
"Last year I wouldn't have been able to ride the guy for the win," Arand said. "When things go the other guy's way, you have to change your mindset. If you're down a couple points, you have to keep going point-by-point. If you get taken down, get up and get it back as fast as you can."
That may not have happened last winter, said OSU coach Jim Zalesky, who also got the better of his former Iowa teammate, Badgers' coach Barry Davis.
"When something went wrong in a match he had a hard time turning around," Zalesky said. "This year he got taken down at the end of the (second) period, but he came back to win. That was our biggest match. He recovered, came out strong in the third period and won."
Keegan Davis, a 2-1 victor at 157, was OSU's lone senior starter. Redshirt sophomore Jason Lara (125), redshirt freshman Mike Mangrum (141), junior Colby Covington (174) and aforementioned sophomores Hanke and Jack all won. Sophomore Kelly Kubec lost in OT to 10th-ranked Tyler Graff, and freshman R.J. Pena battled but was pinned by No. 2-ranked Kyle Ruschell, a fifth-year senior.
"R.J. got beat bad but he went out there to beat the guy. He just got caught in a position that he has to get better at," Zalesky said. "Both his shots, when he got scored on ... he just has to get better at finishing, and as the years goes on I think he will.
"(Ruschell) is one of the top guys in the country. It's a good measuring stick. R.J. has the right attitude. I'm not worrying about him getting down on himself. He knows he'll get better."
The Beavers had nine champions at the Nov. 13-14 Southern Oregon Open, but the competition was much stiffer on Sunday. Wisconsin sophomore Andrew Howe (165) was a runnerup and Ruschell placed third at the 2009 NCAA championships.
"I felt our team was coming along, but until you go out there and prove it you never know," Zalesky said. "We wrestled OK, for the most part. Some matches we didn't hold up like we should, but it's early.
"It's good to see where we're at. Last weekend we beat up on some individuals, but we really couldn't tell where to get better. Against some tougher competition (Sunday) you can tell we have to get better."
Ex-NCAA champions Don Conway (1961), Jeff Lewis (1969-70), Roger Weigel (1971), Larry Bielenberg (1975), Howard Harris (1980) and Les Gutches (1995-96) were honored in person before the dual. Greg Strobel (1973-74) and Dan Hicks (1978-79) were unable to attend.
"It was good for us to see those guys who had success out here, because lately there hasn't been as much just a couple guys here and there," Arand said. "It's nice to see our history alive and well and doing good."
