LUBBOCK, Texas - These early-season games never seem to be easy for the Oregon State men's basketball team.

The outcome on Saturday, however, was much better for the Beavers after a big loss to Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the season-opener on Friday.

The Beavers (1-1) overcame a frosty spell and outlasted South Dakota 62-47 in the second day of play at the Duel in the Desert tournament at Texas Tech University.

OSU coach Craig Robinson said he was pleased with how well the players bounced back from their 67-43 loss to the Islanders.

"It looked like we had a little bit more energy, a little bit more confidence," Robinson said. "We were a little bit more sure of what we were capable of doing and then we executed it, and that's what we didn't do (Friday)."

Cold shooting once again threatened to derail OSU, but the Beavers found their shooting touch in time to hold on.

The Beavers wasted little time taking control in the second half and seemed poised to pull away for a blowout.

When Jared Cunningham drove for a lay-up and Seth Tarver hit a jumper, the Beavers had turned an 11-point halftime lead into a 47-28 advantage and eventually pushing it to 21.

Then the lid slammed shut on the basket for the Beavers. South Dakota whittled away at the lead, cutting it to 50-43 with four minutes left.

Key baskets by Angus Brandt and Roeland Schaftenaar stemmed the tide and put the Beavers up 58-45 with just over a minute left.

"We still have some kinks to work out," Robinson said. "We missed quite a few lay-ups, still missing too many foul shots, but I liked how we hit the boards and I liked our patience against their match-up (zone)."

Brandt made some key plays for the Beavers in the second half.

"There were a couple times in there where he made some passes that were Roeland-esque," Robinson said. "And that's good because that helps Roeland get a couple of easier shots and Roeland doesn't always have to be that guy who's making that pass for somebody to score. I think that Angus is going to be a really good player for us."

The Beavers fared much better in the first half on Saturday after a dismal performance against the Islanders on Friday that just got worse and worse.

The Beavers led 32-21 at the half. They shot 56 percent from the field, hitting 13 of 23 field goals and 3 of 6 from the line. The Beavers scored 14 points in the paint.

OSU's defense was solid from the start. The Beavers held South Dakota to 8 of 27 shooting in the first half.

The Beavers play Texas Tech at 1 p.m. today.
