Beavers take down Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -Haiden Palmer scored a career-high 18 points and the Oregon State women's basketball team claimed the Northern Arizona Thanksgiving Classic Championship with a 62-33 win over the host Lumberjacks Saturday at the Rolle Activity Center.

The Beavers (4-1) defeated Belmont 76-52 in the first game of the classic on Friday.

Palmer was 6-for-8 from the field and 1-for-1 from beyond the three-point line on Saturday. She surpassed her previous season high of eight points achieved against Cal Poly in the season opener.

The Beavers shot 46.2 percent from the field, and outrebounded the Lumberjacks 37-31. Palmer tied for the team lead in rebounds with Kate Lanz with six.

OSU forced 18 Northern Arizona turnovers, collecting six steals in the process. NAU had three steals.

Amy Patton led NAU with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior Talisa Rhea was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after posting 31 points over the two games, including 25 against Belmont. Rhea had six points in the championship victory.

Julie Futch was also named to the all-tournament team after scoring 19 points over the two games. She had 11 points against Belmont and eight Saturday against the Lumberjacks.

Palmer scored 12 points in the first half to lead the Beavers into the locker room. OSU held a 34-13 lead at the half on the strength of shooting 44.4 percent from the field. The Beavers also knocked down nine free throws while Northern Arizona attempted just two, missing both.

Palmer was 3-for-4 from the field and knocked down the Beavers' only three-pointer of the half. The freshman was also 5-for-6 from the line.

OSU had 24 rebounds in the half, including 10 offensive. The Beavers turned those into 14 second-chance points.

The Beavers scored the first eight points of the game before NAU's Patton hit a jumper with 16:34 remaining. OSU built its lead to 26-6 before a Northern Arizona three-pointer with 3:31 left. The Beavers went on an 8-4 run to end the half.

The Beavers are off until hosting UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 5.
