The years and names change, but one things has remained constant throughout the LaVonda Wagner coaching era at Oregon State.

Every season, a first-year player makes a serious bid for extended playing time in the women's basketball team's opening exhibition game.

Ashley Allen made her splash in her 2006 debut, Talisa Rhea made hers in 2007 and Brittney Kennedy did likewise in 2008.

Freshman Haiden Palmer kept the tradition alive on Monday night. The 5-foot-8 guard from Vista Del Lago High in Moreno Valley, Calif., had 20 points, six steals and three assists in only 21 minutes to spark the Beavers to a 113-35 rout of Concordia before a crowd of 614 at Gill Coliseum.

"I was very excited" to discover she'd be starting her first college game, said Palmer, who was 3-of-6 on high-arcing three-point shots. "I worked hard to get here. It's definitely more intense than high school, but I like it.

"I embrace it, and I'm just trying to be more aggressive and have an impact on offense and defense. I have the support of the team and the coaches and that's helped me a lot to adjust. I'm still trying to adapt and get better."

Added Wagner: "She did an excellent job of scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. She has to continue to keep being aggressive because it's going to get more physical and faster as we continue."

Preseason exhibitions are usually a mismatch and Monday night was no exception. The Beavers led 56-23 at halftime, held the NAIA Division II Cavaliers to eight baskets, forced 33 turnovers and surrendered only 12 second-half points.

"There were times we looked like a very good team, there were times we looked young, there were times we looked rusty," Wagner said. "What I do feel is that for the whole 40 minutes we were a team. We had 30 assists on 38 baskets.

"We had so many people in double figure playing time and scoring, that's good for us. We want to play team offense and team defense."

Rhea's 23 points and Palmer's 20 led a parade of seven players in double figures. Freshman guard Kate Lanz of Central Catholic, the 2009 state Gatorade Player of the Year, had 16 points and eight assists. Senior guard Julie Futch had 14 points and four assists; freshman post Tayler Champion had 12 points; sophomore forward Kirsten Tilleman had 10 points and seven rounds; and senior post Anita Burdick had 10 points.

"It was good to see everyone come in and make an impact," said Rhea, one of two (Tilleman is the other) returning starters from the 2009 WNIT club. "We had a lot of people who scored, got rebounds and steals.

"It was a good team effort and it was good to see people feel comfortable and confident in their role. When they got in the game, they were able to execute."

The Beavers host Lewis & Clark at 4 p.m. Sunday in their final exhibition. Opening night is Nev. 13 against Cal Poly at Gill Coliseum.
