LAS VEGAS - Representatives from the Oregon State football team and Brigham Young were in Las Vegas on Thursday to help promote their upcoming game with the local media.
The 15th-ranked Beavers face off with the No. 16 Cougars in the 18th Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22 in Sam Boyd Stadium.
This year's game pits the Pacific-10 Conference co-runnerup against the No. 2 team from the Mountain West Conference.
Here are what people were saying at the press conference:
Las Vegas Bowl Executive Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy:
"This matchup between two top-20 teams, the Oregon State Beavers and the BYU Cougars, is going to be one of the best ever."
OSU athletic director Bob De Carolis:
"On behalf of Oregon State football I would like to congratulate coach (Bronco) Mendenhall on a great season. I have watched BYU this year and I know we have a formidable opponent and we are looking forward to the challenge."
OSU coach Mike Riley:
"It is great to be here. I like playing against people that I know. If you do this for a long time you get the opportunity to do that once in a while, and Bronco is a great guy, a great program and we have gotten to know each other the past couple of years. I really appreciate their program and what they have been able to do."
"I am also very proud to bring the Beavers back to Vegas. We were here a few years ago and they do a great job. It was fun for our team, the atmosphere was great and we appreciated that."
"Our team was somewhat of a mystery to me going into the year. We lost a lot of good players from last year. I don't know if I have ever been more proud of a group. We had a couple bumps early, but we played well early on and they kept working and our coaches kept coaching and we did get better."
"I think this is a great matchup to play BYU and for our team to get a chance to do that I think is awesome. We are looking forward to it."
OSU quarterback Sean Canfiled:
"On behalf of my teammates, we are excited to be playing a quality opponent in BYU. The last time we were here we were able to take down, with a minute and nineteen seconds left, UNLV. No hard feelings if you were in the stadium, was just doing my job."
"We couldn't be more excited and are looking forward to playing a really good opponent in BYU."
BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe:
"We are so grateful to Tina, (bowl president) Rob (Dondero) and the rest of the Las Vegas community for inviting us back to the Las Vegas Bowl. We have had nothing but excitement and fun and a great opportunity to come here as a team the last four years and we look forward to this year."
BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall:
"We are excited to be back in Las Vegas and looking forward to this opportunity. We are playing an excellent opponent, probably the best in the five years that we have been here, and that is what makes this exciting."
"I have a lot of respect for Oregon State, their coaches and players. It will be a great matchup."
"In terms of our team, it is kind of the same version of what has happened the past four years. We won 10 games again and we have continued to improve. Once you reach a certain mark with leaps and gains, it is not so much leaps and gains but inching grows and trying to squeeze more out of what you have."
BYU tight end Dennis Pitta:
"I am grateful to be here representing our team and on behalf of my teammates, we are excited to be back here in Las Vegas. For me personally this is my third year and I have had a tremendous experience every year."
"I consider this our bowl now. I don't know anything else. I have never been to another bowl and it is great to be back."
