Coming home after a month on the road worked out for the Oregon State gymnastics team.
The seventh-ranked Beavers concluded the regular season Friday night with a 196.650-195.275 nonconference victory over No. 18 Kentucky before a crowd of 3,463 in Gill Coliseum.
OSU's score topped its regional qualifying score, which determines rankings. And it tied for the team's third best score of the season.
For all the success, coach Tanya Chaplin felt her team was nervous and could have done better.
"Putting the scores aside there are a lot of little things that we had happen on vault from the very beginning," Chaplin said. "Beam, we had a few misses on things. I've seen them on the road a little calmer.
"Bars were pretty good. On every event there were small things. I don't now if it was the end of finals or what. It doesn't matter what it is. They have to bring it every week. I would have liked to see them a little sharper."
The Beavers (13-3) didn't count a fall and beat Kentucky (7-7) in the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise.
Senior Mandi Rodriguez won the all-around with a score of 39.425, took the vault with a 9.950 and the floor exercise with a 9.25.
"It was good as I could have asked for, for a senior night," Rodriguez said. "I did what I came to do. I wanted to enjoy everything and go out with no regret. I did that.
"I know it's not the end for me with the postseason. Then it might hit me. But it was great to go out with this kind of night with our fans."
Senior Laura-Ann Chong kept up with her teammate and won the uneven bars with a score of 9.900 and took the balance beam title with a 9.875.
"We did a really good job on three events," Chong said. "There were a few hiccups on beam, but it was an overall good meet. I felt like we ended up on a high not on floor. It felt really good to put it all out there."
The Beavers struggled on the beam again. That was the only event Kentucky won.
Makayla Stambaugh slipped off the beam, so her score was the one thrown out. Melanie Jones and Rodriguez nearly fell off.
This has been OSU's weakest event through the season. Chong says the team needs to work on dealing with distractions more in practice so problems don't persist into the postseason.
"It's a lot of psychology and your mental state you are in," Chong said. "The girls have the skills; it's just getting in that mental state to compete no matter the environment. We come off bars with so much energy and then you have to take it down a notch for beam."
There was some controversy about the judging for Kentucky on the floor. Only one of their routines came in as high as OSU's worst number.
The Wildcats protested, and after the judges reviewed the score they lowered one of their scores. There was something in the routines that they did all year that hadn't caused a deduction until now.
