SALEM — Former Oregon State men’s basketball player Joe Burton has agreed to join the Salem Sabres of the International Basketball League for the 2013 season.
Burton, a 6-foot-7, 295-pound forward/center, averaged 11 points and 6.4 rebounds a game last season for the Beavers.
“Joe Burton will be a great asset to the Sabres organization on and off the court,” Sabres general manager Joe Becerra said in a press release. “We have had our eye on Mr. Burton for awhile and waited until his season was over at OSU before we spoke with him.”
Burton, who was born on the Soboba Indian reservation in Soboba, Calif., was just the second Native American to play men’s basketball for the Beavers.
“Mr. Burton is also particularly interested in impacting the Native American community and has already agreed to help with a basketball camp the Sabres have set up with the Confederate Tribe of Grand Ronde.”
The Sabres will open their first IBL season with games on May 4-5 at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.
