CORVALLIS - This was the sort of game that leaves the winners elated, the losers deflated.

The Oregon State men's basketball team was looking for a sweep of the Bay Area schools on Saturday evening against Stanford at Gill Coliseum.

Instead, after four overtimes and a plethora of opportunities, the Beavers lost to the Cardinal 103-101.

The Beavers (11-5, 1-3) had a shot for the win at the end of the fourth OT.

Roberto Nelson got off a 3. It paused on the rim, teasing the 7,239 fans on hand, but fell off.

Nelson said the shot felt good and he thought he'd get the bounce.

"We were trying to get the ball to Jared (Cunningham) at the end, towards the end of the game, they keyed on Jared," Nelson said. "And they went to double Jared so I had to flash up and Joe (Burton) threw a good pass. I shoot that shot so many times. I've just got to make that."

Stanford nearly won it in regulation as Josh Owens hit a shot at the buzzer that was waved off after a review.

The Cardinal made up for it with a game-tying 3-pointer in the third OT.

The Cardinal (13-3, 3-1) overcame the Beavers with 13 3-pointers and an aggressive style of play by a bigger lineup.

The Beavers had a few chances on a late possession but missed as bodies banged around.

"It's kind of tough, but any player has to adjust to it," Burton said. "I think we did a good job of adjusting to the size and the paint being packed up."

Stanford made shot after shot in response to OSU plays.

"It was tough," Nelson said. "Every time we felt like we got something going, Stanford did a good job of coming back down and hitting big shots and answering the baskets we made."

Burton had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Cunningham and Nelson led OSU with 19 points each.

Instead of evening their conference record at 2-2, the Beavers are 1-3 as they head to Arizona next week.

"It's kind of a reality check for us," Nelson said. "It's good for us because we're not that type of team, we're not a 1-3 type of team. I think it's actually the opposite. So we can use this as motivation going into the next games."
