KICKOFF: 3:45 p.m. Dec. 29

WHERE: Alamodome, San Antonio

TV: ESPN (35)

RADIO: KEJO (1240 AM)

RECORDS: Texas 8-4; Oregon State 9-3

SERIES: Texas leads 2-0

LATEST LINE: Oregon State by 1

COACH: Mack Brown, 15th season at Texas (149-43) and 29th overall (235-117-1)

OFFENSE: The Longhorns are a middle of the pack team in the Big 12 Conference. The rushing offense (176.0 ypg) ranked sixth, passing offense (265.0 ypg) sixth, total offense (441.0 ypg) sixth and scoring offense (36.1 ppg) seventh. … Several ball carriers have been used, led by RB Johnathan Gray (142 carries, 683 yards, 3 TDs) and RB Joe Bergeron (122, 565, 16). Bergeron hurt his shoulder in the last game against Kansas State and is questionable for the bowl game. … QB David Ash (rib) missed the last game. He is listed as probable, but Brown wouldn’t say Thursday if he will start. Ash averaged 235.5 ypg passing and 10.8 ypg rushing, and threw 17 TDs and rushed for another. … Case McCoy is the backup with a 169.0 rating, compared to 154.9 for Ash. … Eighteen receivers have a catch and seven have at least 13. WR Mike Davis (54 receptions, 909 yards, 7 TDs) and WR Jaxon Shipley (51, 649, 6) are the main targets. … The OL protects the QB well, allowing only 1.2 sacks a game.

DEFENSE: The rushing defense (198.8 ypg) has struggled this season, ranking 100th in the nation and last in the Big 12. The pass defense (213.5 ypg), however, is 38th nationally and third in the conference, while the total defense (412.3 ypg) and scoring defense (29.4 ppg) are both fifth. … The team has 13 INTs led by CB Quandre Diggs and CB Carrington Byndom with three each. Diggs has seven pass breakups and Byndom six. … The team averages 2.1 sacks a game, led by DE Alex Okafor with eight. He also leads the team in TFLs with 12. The team has 101 to lead the Big 12. … S Kenny Vaccaro (99 tackles) and LB Steve Edmond (97) are the leading tacklers.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Texas leads the Big 12 in net punting (40.8 average). P Alex King averages 45.3 with nine of 50-plus. … Field goals have been shaky with two kickers who combined for 10 of 17. They are 7 of 14 beyond 30 yards. … D.J. Monroe averages 26.5 yards on kickoff returns with one TD. Marquise Goodwin (thumb) averages 25.2, but is questionable for the game. … Diggs averages 7.3 on punt returns.

NOTABLE: Oregon State is the home team. … The Beavers lost the first meeting with the Longhorns 35-0 in 1980. Both their previous games were in Austin. … Brown has led the Longhorns to a 9-4 record in bowl games, and won the national title in 2005.

two young teams on the rise and rebounding from losing seasons. Texas leading tacklers being both safeties tells me teams either pass alot in the Big 12, or the Long Horn front seven get pushed around alot on running plays requiring safety help or both. It looks like strength against strength with Texas pass D @ 213 yds per game and Beavers avg. 300+, while Beaver Run D is usually strong in allowing 120yds. per game vs. Texas average rushing per game of 176.
Difference in game may be in overall D. Oregon St. allows less than 20pts per game while Texas allows 29pts. Beavers are strong on 3rd down conversions allowing only 29% while Texas allows 37%. Beavers bend but do not break as often on D. 1pt. win by Beavers is as close as it can get. I predict Beavers by 10pts. or more if they can run for 100+ yds and no turnovers.
